Zeia or Zea was a key ingredient in the diet of the ancient Greeks. The Greeks did not eat bread made from wheat, they would rather give to the animals. They ate bread Zea or Barley.
Only in great need ate barley mixed with wheat. Some argue that the depictions of the goddess Dimitra do not show wheat, but Zeia.The ancient Egypti ans also highly appreciated “the graces” of this grain, since according to Herodotus were manufacturing bread exclusively from Zea.
The Alexander fed his army with Zea, to be men of healthy and spiritually developed.
Nutritional facts of Zea flour
Zea flour similar to wheat’s grain, but its nutrition facts differ significantly. Zea flour (other names Emmer, Zeia and Spelt) is high in fiber, minerals and protein. Its products are considered to be more nutritious and palatable. Sometimes is confused with the German Dinkel grain. Zea is two times richer in dietary fiber than wheat, two times richer in protein with a high amount of vitamins A, B, C and E. It is also high in magnesium and very low in gluten.
